Our first session is going to be about the myths concerning abortion. I’ll start with the myths I know and any of you can also reply with the myths you know about abortion

Myth 1;

ABORTION CAUSES INFERTILITY

Fact:
Safe legal abortion by qualified practitioners is rarely associated with future risk of infertility. It is important to note that most women return to the pre pregnancy fertility state days/weeks after complete abortion. Only a few experiences a delay in the return of normal menstrual cycles

MYTH 2;

ONLY YOUNG/AND IRRESPONSIBLE WOMEN CHOOSE ABORTION

FACT:
False. Studies show that women of all age( within 12-54 years) , religion, ethnicity , race, etc choose abortion. In fact , 3 out of 4 married women abort. Abortion is usually done by married women due to a lot of reasons which will be discussed below

MYTH 3

ABORTION CAUSES BREAST CANCER

FACT:
Studies show no correlation between abortion and breast cancer. This is evident in the studies conducted by the National Cancer Institute in 2003. Another studies of 1.5 million women conducted in the New England Journal of Medicine also proved that there’s no relationship between abortion and breast cancer

MYTH

ABORTION CAUSES EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA

FACT:
Studies show that emotional and psychological trauma is actually experienced by women before and during the abortion process and only a few are traumatized by it long after the abortion process. And those who are likely to be traumatized by it are those who are firm believers against abortion . Is there anyone here who has been traumatized post abortion? And is still traumatized by it ?

MYTH 5

WOMEN ARE COERCED INTO HAVING ABORTIONS

FACT;
No and yes.
In a 2005 Guttmache Institute survey, 1209 women were asked their reason for abortion. 14% cited that their husbands/ partners asked them to abort ; 6% cited their parents as the ones who asked them to abort. That means the remaining 80% made the decision on their own without coercion after considering a lot .
What about you? What caused you to make the decision to abort? Was it your partner, your parents or yourself? Do you know anyone with such encounter? Share with us

MYTH 6

ABORTION WILL BE A MEANS OF BIRTH CONTROL IF LEGALIZED

FACT:
Well it can and cannot. Why??

Ask yourself.
Isn’t abortion pills or methods more expensive than emergency pills, condoms etc?

Is there pain associated with the use of condom, post emergency pills or other contraceptive methods. Well, there might with other methods. But can that pain be compared to the pain of undergoing an abortion?
Why then do you think that people will prefer suffering and spending money on abortion if it’s legalized.

Don’t you think that they’ll only resort to abortion if the other contraceptive methods fail??

Will you rather ignore all the cheap and easy contraceptive methods and resort to abortion as your contraceptive method???

CRIMINALIZING ABORTION WILL STOP ABORTION

FACT:

Excuse me, did you really think that?

We’re dealing with humanity.
People will always find ways to abort even if the legal sentence for an abortion is death.

They’ll resort to unsafe methods and end us endangering themselves.

THEY WILL ALWAYS FIND WAYS TO ABORT

I think that the first choice for many people will be contraception! As you said, a lot of people don’t want to go through the physical and psychological effects of abortion. So they do it because they need it.

MYTH 8

ABORTION IS ANTI-PARENTHOOD

FACT:
Is it???

You should know that abortion is carried on mostly by married women.

Why???

People take into account their living expenses, their health, their child spacing among a lot.

Imagine a mother of 5 with children ages 1, 2, 5 , 7 and 10 ; so little spacing between the children’s ages, who is mentally and financially incapable and is suffering to provide adequate care to each of these little ones to welcome an extra child. One may say it’s wise to focus on the 5 at hand, wouldn’t you ?

She’s a parent isn’t she?

So are you saying that if she makes the conscious decision to abort the 6th pregnancy, she’s anti-parenthood?

How???

MYTH 9

ABORTION IS DANGEROUS

FACT:

Maybe. I might agree with you if you re-quote that . Probably say, “UNSAFE ABORTION IS DANGERUOUS”

Most safe abortion is conducted in the first trimester and trust me it’s more safe than a 9 months pregnancy journey .

Do you have any experience where an abortion nearly cost you your health or life ? Or know anyone with such experience ??
